Safin wins sets up Ferrero clash

Marat Safin overcame a knee problem to beat Lukas Dlouhy and set up a mouthwatering third-round clash with Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Third seed Safin made a poor start and qualifier Dlouhy later served for a two sets to one lead, but Safin came through 6-7 6-3 7-5 6-1.

Ferrero, the 2003 champion, beat Jan Hernych 6-4 6-4 6-2.

Guillermo Coria earlier endured some nervous moments before Serbian teenager Novak Djokovic was forced to retire.

Ferrero is seeded 30th after injury and illness but is coming back to form and will pose a stiff test for Safin, whose fitness is in doubt.

"The knee was really hurting me," Safin admitted after his win. "I couldn't put my weight on one leg as it was too painful. It hurts."

However, the Russian is determined to take on Ferrero.

"I'll definitely play against him, then we'll see," he said. "He is a better volleyer than me. I have to serve consistently and then break his serve."

I knew it would be difficult for him to keep it up for five sets

Coria on Djokovic

Coria will next face Austria's Jurgen Melzer, who beat 29th seed Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-5).

Djokovic took the first set before the Argentine recovered to lead 4-6 6-2 4-2 when the teenager pulled out with breathing problems.

Coria was impressed by Djokovic, and admitted: "I was surprised at his speed at the start but I knew it would be difficult for him to keep it up for five sets.

"I have been working on my fitness. You should be able to play long matches in the hot weather."

Djokovic, 18, who played three matches in qualifying, said: "I just couldn't hold on until the end.

"I couldn't breathe properly. The problem with the sinuses has bothered me for one year."

One of the matches of the day saw Nicolas Kiefer overcome Arnaud Clement and the Paris crowd in a 4-6 6-2 6-2 4-6 6-4 win.

Ninth seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina hammered Albert Montanes 6-1 6-3 6-4 and faces Paul-Henri Mathieu in the last 32.

Germany's Tommy Haas, the 21st seed, led Vince Spadea 6-4 6-3 when the American retired, and next plays 12th seed Nikolay Davydenko, who beat Olivier Rochus 3-6 7-5 6-2 6-3.

Russia's Igor Andreev saw off Jarkko Nieminen - conqueror of Andre Agassi in the previous round - 6-2 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-2 and takes on Kiefer next.
